Ohioans Step Up Recycling at State Fair
New partnerships help Fair divert more than 70 tons from landfills

Columbus, August 26, 2009

Recycling at the Ohio State Fair increased more
than 250 percent over last year, resulting in 71.4 tons of material diverted from Ohiolandfills.

Recycling efforts were boosted this year with a Special Assistance Grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) and a new partnership with Rumpke Recycling.

gRumpke Recycling worked closely with the Ohio Expo Centerʹs maintenance department to integrate recycling into our overall clean]up procedures,h said Virgil Strickler, general manager for the Ohio Expo Center and State Fair, which hosted approximately 826,000 people during the 12]day event.

Cardboard accounted for about half of the recovered material, resulting largely from the cooperation of vendors. The general public participated by contributing commingled materials including plastic bottles, aluminum cans and paper. The recyclables were processed at Rumpkefs Material Recovery Facility in Columbus.

gRumpke is proud to be part of a tremendous effort to conserve natural
resources and landfill space,h said Todd Wielinski, operations manager for Rumpke. gThe level of cooperation between Expo Center, ODNR and Rumpke personnel was significant to contributing to the success of this recycling effort.h

ODNR Division of Recycling grants fund various recycling programs across the state including this new public private partnership with Rumpke at the fairgrounds.

gThe dramatic increase in the amount recycled this year reflects the growing public interest in all aspects of resource conservation,h said Sean Logan, ODNR Director. gWe are proud to participate in this public private partnership, and the message of optimism it represents for the future of environmental stewardship in
Ohio.h
